How is Your Hot Weather Safety Knowledge with Dogs?
Dogs are poorly adapted to be able to function in warm or hot temperatures, compared to humans who are extremely well-adapted physiologically to cool themselves in the heat. This unfortunate disconnect between physiological ability levels can lead to dogs unknowingly being placed in situations that are comfortable for humans but dangerous for dogs. Everyone knows that hot cars can kill dogs, but the biggest cause of heat related illness in dogs is exertion/exercise, according to research studies.
